The MSU basketball team advances to the NAIA National Quarterfinals
Story by Mike Levin
KANSAS CITY -- It didn't take two overtimes for MSU Friday morning, but the result is the same. The Cougars are moving on in the NAIA Men's Basketball National Tournament, after beating Wayland Baptist 84-71 in the 2nd round.
The Cougars got off to a slow start offensively, but got going behind seniors James Spencer and Jarvis Jackson. Spencer led the team with 21 points, to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Jackson scored 18, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 5 assists, and stole 4 passes.
As a team, MSU shot over 43% from three point territory, making 13 shots from beyond the arc. 5 Cougars hit at least 2 shots from downtown.
It's the third time MSU has defeated Wayland Baptist in the tournament's second round, after wins in 2003 and 2004. The Cougars made it to the tournament's championship game in each of those two years.
Up next for MSU, a quarterfinal matchup with Azusa Pacific Saturday afternoon at 2.
