MSU Director of Student Life will be among the top female contenders in Boston
Story by Mike Levin
BECKLEY -- Monday morning the world's best runners will converge on Boston for the city's annual marathon. One of the competitors is a Tennessee native who now works for MSU.
After running competitively for six years in both high school and college, Emily Chaney was burned out. But moving to the Mountain State gave her a fresh start. "It's absolutely gorgeous here, there's so much to do, outdoor activities that you can never get bored. The hills are the best training ever, it's a great place to train and there's definitely some phenomenal athletes in this area."
Emily moved here for rafting and mountain biking jobs, but was hired by MSU in January as the Director of Student Life. "My supervisor's been super supportive through the training and understands how tired you can get with the special events. It can be challenging but it's a lot of fun."
Her next challenge takes her north, to the city known for its seafood, history, and championship baseball team. "I have been to Boston once, I went with some friends in college. We went and spent a week up there, but we were doing the tourist thing. It was freezing cold."
In the middle of April every year its citizens celebrate Patriots Day in remembrance of the American Revolution. And their biggest event, a marathon in which Emily will be competing. "I've just heard so many great things about the Boston Marathon. I've been told to write my name all over my body because the crowds, they will scream for you the entire way. The streets are just lined with people. So I'm really excited about it."
So what's Emily's strategy for the race? "I'm going to try and go out and pace it pretty evenly. I've heard the first half is downhill and the up hills, not that they're super steep, but because they're so late into the run, they're actually painful."
Her goal is to finish in under three hours. Emily is sponsored by the Knoxville Track Club Runners Market, and travels with a team all over the country.
