TAZEWELL, Va. -- Virginia lawmakers and community activists will head to the state capital next week after budget cuts eliminated the state's day report centers.
Tazewell County Commonwealth Attorney Dennis Lee, along with Senator Phillip Puckett and Delegate Dan Bowling will be in Richmond next Tuesday to meet with Governor Tim Kaine.
Day Report Centers provide substance abuse classes and job training to non-violent offenders and in Tazewell over 100 people out on probation who benefited from the program will now either have to go to jail or will be back out on the streets.
Lee says every year over 600 people are indicted on felony drug charges.
Judges then had the option to send them to the day reporting program.
Now, they'll be sent to jail.
Housing one person for a year costs the state $23,000.
Additionally, seven parole officers will lose their jobs as a result of the program cuts.
