CHARLESTON -- FestivALL Charleston in cooperation with the WV International Film Festival will present the West Virginia premiere of "Still Bill," a documentary on soul-singer and songwriter Bill Withers, from Slab Fork, WV on Wednesday, June 24.
"Still Bill" makes its premiere on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the WVSU Capitol Plaza Theater, 123 Summers St. Charleston with a reception prior to the film at 6pm.
Filmmaker and co-director Damani Baker, who has spent the last eight years working on "Still Bill," will be on hand to introduce the movie and take questions immediately following. Filming included four trips to West Virginia with Withers.
Bill Withers, best known for his hits "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lean on Me," and "Just the Two of Us," is a songwriter whose works are an indispensable part of popular culture. After his last studio record in 1985 Withers took the road less traveled by choosing family life rather than continuing the pursuits of fame in the fickle business of popular music. Now, 35 years after his first hit "Ain't No Sunshine," Withers is the subject of a documentary that could open many ears to his legacy and give viewers a peak at the wisdom that spawned his world-wide hits.
"We are thrilled to screen ‘Still Bill’ at FestivALL in Charleston. Showing the film in West Virginia is a true homecoming: so much of the film was shot in Bill's hometown and West Virginia's spirit really shines through in this story." said "Still Bill" Directors Damani Baker and Alex Vlack in a joint statement. "FestivALL is a great way to bring art back to a community that always supports the arts from the ground up."
The film, which premiered nationally in March 2009 at Austin, Texas, just wrapped up successful screenings in Washington, D.C. at the AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival. Following the film’s WV Premiere, Baker takes "Still Bill" to Germany for the Film Fest München.
Tickets for the movie are $20 and available in advance at Taylor Books, 226 Capitol St, in Charleston and will be available at the door on June 24 at the Capitol Plaza theater. Proceeds from the event will benefit the West Virginia International Film Festival.
