Gov. Manchin to Sign Autism Insurance Bill
Posted Tuesday, June 30, 2009 ; 03:06 AM | View Comments | Post Comment

Parents of autistic children will get credits on their state income tax returns.

HUNTINGTON -- Governor Joe Manchin will be signing an autism insurance bill Tuesday afternoon.

The bill will give credit to parents of autistic children, on their state income tax returns, for money they set aside for their child's care.

The Governor will join other state and local leaders at the West Virginia Autism Training Center on the campus of Marshall University at 3:00 p.m.

West Virginia is the first state to establish a trust fund for the future support of children with autism.

What's so special about autism? What about kids with feeding tubes and wheel chairs and worse?

What makes the autism spectrum any different?

WBOY, it seems that this article IS completely false. Where did you get this information and how can you pass on information that is completely inaccurate?

I have had a hard time being a viewer of your station as most of the news you show isn't even news worthy while you pass up important news. You're always advertising updates and breaking news and to watch the news program coming up and then you report the exact same thing you did in an earlier program.

I think I am done watching your station.

I work for the ATC at Marshall and i was at this bill signing, this news article isn't correct in it's headline because the bill doesn't have anything to do with insurance. Its a bill to encourage families in WV to build a trust fund for their autistic child and in return the family receives some tax breaks up to $2,000.

the below article reflects true statements, this article does not:

I am gathering that this singles out children with autism. My grand-daughter has DOWNS and they run into the same issues as these children. If you work and pay for your insurance you are lost. You have the 0 to 3 and after that there isn't any assistance for them. We need a better care system for our children and no one seems to have an answer for it. Their future has to planned for in their present.

As a parent of an ASD child, both my wife and I are employed with benefits. Insurance companies are not required to pay for ASD related services. There is no law requiring them to do so in WV. They can however bill for speech delay and some sensory treatments. If you are on state assistance or Medicaid then all expenses are covered.

Take a look at this from my perspective:

We make too much for free care, (denied for every program at least 3 times). Both of us are privately insured but are benefits are not required to pay for ASD services. I pay for the insurance, and I pay the state a multitude of taxes. What a great system we have. Legislation has failed to pass any kind of Insurance law to change this. Next time you see one of your local delegates or senators, ask them why this is not important to them. You maybe shocked when the truth unfolds. In fact, a real journalist could score a story of a lifetime if they had the guts to expose this.

As for this Bill, It’s a trust fund, similar to the 529 plan for education. Just what I need, the state holding what little money I have left and monitoring it for me. This is hysterical. Not to mention a 2000.00 state tax credit, that saves you about 100.00. This works out to cover the cost of 20 minutes of therapy, once, seriously. It’s a total waste of paper and time.

The Governor should take one look at this legislation, send it back and require legislation to bring him back meaningful, worthwhile bill requiring insurance companies to cover ASD related services.

This is not good enough!!! This is not an autism insurance bill!!! My son is autistic and we pay $40 a week for speech therapy that our state PEIA insurance doesn't cover. This is not an autism insurance bill, this is a tax credit!! I'm pretty sure that I would've gotten a tax credit anyways. But meanwhile, I still have to pay out of pocket all year long. NOT SUITABLE, JOE!!!

Can we get some more info on this? I really don't understand what this bill covers.

I'm a parent of an Autistic child and this seems like it would only help middle class families. Good insurance coverage will take care of most expenses already and the poorer families will not be able to pay for the expenses before the 'refund".

There are already programs to take care of the basic care and anything else will be pretty much impossible to pay for without getting the money first.

This is not an Insurance Bill. Clarify your headline. Our inept legislation couldn't pass an insurance bill.
