State Fire Marshal says it's because of financial problems.
COAL CITY -- State Fire Marshal Sterling Lewis says he's delivering a "cease and desist" order to Coal City Volunteer Fire Department Wednesday evening.
The order shuts down the department for the next 90 days so financial problems can be ironed out.
If those problems aren't resolved, the department could be permanently closed.
Lewis says Coal City's Fire Chief Ryan Bragg is resigning and an interim chief will be appointed.
According to Lewis, the department is delinquent on its worker's compensation payments.
"Because they are behind on their worker's comp payments none of these firefighters are covered if they get injured," said Lewis.
He says the department is also behind on payments on one of its fire trucks and has had some utilities turned off because of lack of payment.
Other local fire departments will be handling calls in the Coal City area for the next 90 days.
Lewis says these problems came to light Wednesday morning and his office will launch a full investigation.
