Health conference to be held in Kimball

McDowell County -- Diabetes education is the focus of a health conference in McDowell County this weekend.

The Council of Southern Mountains is teaming up with the West Virginia Office of Minority Health to host a diabetes seminar on Saturday.

The event will be held the Kimball Memorial Building.

Organizers say African Americans are the target audience for this conference.

According to Randal Johnson, Executive Director with the Council of Southern Mountains, says, "It's vital that we start having innovative programs and initiatives to overcome this disparity."

The seminar happens from 9am-4pm Saturday. Attendees will get information on prevention, eating habits, and coping with the disease.

Diabetes is definitely a huge problem in WV. As a Registered Dietitian, I counsel folks all the time on healthy lifestyle change to help with blood sugar control. What I find challenging is all the misinformation out there. People with diabetes don't need to purchase any special foods or give up everything they love in order to control their blood sugar. Making changes in 4 main areas can control weight, blood sugar and improve quality of life.
