GAULEY BRIDGE --  A woman who went kayaking on the New River was rescued by the Gauley Bridge fire department on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Initial reports came in that the woman had drowned. That prompted a search that involved firefighters and members of the Division of Natural Resources. Late in the afternoon, firefighters located the woman in the water and alive.

Division of Natural Resources officials have identified the woman as 54-year-old Gisella Zarcufsky of Virginia.

She was pulled from the water and CPR was performed. Zarcufsky is now listed in stable condition.

Officials say she was kayaking with family members when the accident happened.

The woman was rescued by 2 kayakers in another party - it took almost 2 hours for the rescue teams to arrive. If it were not for the brave and dangerous swift water rescue by the 2 expert kayakers and their immediate CPR, Ms Zarcufsky would have perished. She was not breathing and had no pulse when the young men recovered her limp body from the torrent. They are truly citizen heroes.
