Second year Alderson Elementary School participated in International Walk to School Month.
Story by Alicia Suka
ALDERSON -- Greenbrier County elementary school students put a state grant to good use Wednesday.
The kids from Alderson Elementary School walked to class this morning using the town's new sidewalks.
It's part of the International Walk to School month.
Kids, parents, teachers and others in the Alderson community hit the pavement for this event.
The sidewalks are part of a multi-phase grant that will eventually fund about a quarter of a mile of walk-ways.
"We're going to start the second phase of this project here within probably the next couple of weeks. There's probably another two to three phases that will come and allow us to extend the walking routes," said Luther Lewallan, Alderson Mayor.
International Walk to School month involves 42 countries and millions of people.
The project started in 1994 in Great Britain.
It promotes healthy habits, environmental issues and emphasizes the need for safe streets.
