BECKLEY -- A Pennsylvania man died on I-77 south Saturday afternoon.
William Barker, 65, was driving with his wife, Vera, when their pickup truck struck a parked semi-truck. The semi, which was illegally parked, was vacant at the time of the accident.
Police issued a traffic citation to the driver of the semi.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but were too late for Mr. Barker. His wife was taken to Raleigh General, and has since been transported to Charleston with serious injuries.
According to Ghent Volunteer Fire Chief Jim Belcher, the Jaws of Life were needed to remove the Barker’s from their pickup truck.
“To remove the patient for transport we had to use the heavy extrication equipment,” said Belcher.
Fire crews told 59 News that HealthNet was called to the scene, but due to inclement weather the chopper could not be brought in to assist.
Traffic was slowed for nearly two hours, as on-lookers slowed to view debris which had been thrown 20-30 feet from the scene of the accident.
