LINDSIDE -- West Virginia School Superintendent Steve Paine presented April Hobson with the Milken National Educator Award Wednesday, Oct. 21.
The surprise ceremony was held at James Monroe High School. Hobson was selected to receive the award for her role as a model educator for the state and the nation.
The award carries a $25,000 cash prize. Hobson was very emotional about the award.
"I can't believe," cried Hobson, "I can't believe I won $25,000 for teaching, because I love (the job)."
Monroe County Superintendent of Schools, Lyn Guy, was also happy about the recognition.
"This was one of the most exciting days I've had," said Guy. "I've submitted names for consideration for a number of years and I've been disappointed every year. When they called me and told we have a winner. I tell you it was the best thing in the world."
Hobson has been teaching for seven years. She also coaches girl’s soccer for James Monroe High School.
