Superintendent is unavailable to discuss how the levy defeat will impact schools.

FAYETTEVILLE --  Voters turned out in large numbers this weekend to soundly defeat the school bond levy in Fayette County.

The measure would have provided $49 million for school improvements including the consolidation of Mt. Hope, Oak Hill, Fayetteville and Midland Trail high schools into a new facility.

The levy was defeated by a margin of 3 to 1.

Superintendent Chris Perkins is in statewide meetings this week and unavailable to comment on the defeat and what impact it will have on Fayette County schools.

Some who voted against the levy told 59 News they were concerned about travel times to and from school and large class sizes.

I am sure Mr.Perkins is not happy with the outcome of the levy election however the comments from some supporters is that those of us who voted no do not care about the youth of this county and that is simply not the truth. The leadership of the Fayette County Board Of Education are the ones to blame due to their lack of leadership and financial accountability and as proof one only needs to look at the Mt.Hope school that was closed as an example of this total disregard of Taxpayer dollars and the safety of citizens in Mt Hope. This school has been repeatly vandalized and has been used as a manufacturing facility for drug makers with the floor covered with needles and drug capsules. Is this what our schools that were to be closed were going to turn into and why has the board refused to board up the building or sell it to prevent this decline? Many of the schools being used today are simply filthy dirty and no and I repeat no maintenance is or has been done thus the reason these schools are in deplorable condition and Mr.Perkins thinks that we should open our checkbooks and give him a blank check when he is not using our tax dollars wisely now. If Mr.Perkins and others on the Board worked for a private business and failed to do their job as they have this one then they would have been fired long ago. As far as the principals and teachers go we have some very good ones and some that need to be fired for their failure to perform. There is something terribly wrong when our 4th grade students rank 44th in the nation with math scores. It is a terrible shame that our students are suffering due to the lack of leadership in this County and familes are fed up with it and i feel sure that their dissatisfaction with the Board will be felt into the future. Fancy buildings do not create educated children as evidenced by those who attended one room schools years ago but were at least taught to read, write and even were able to learn basic math. It is Teachers who really want to teach because they really care that make a difference and it is parents who will take the time to help their kids with homework that make a difference. Parents and taxpayers need to call the State Board Of Education and let them know that we have had enough of the lack of leadership in The Fayette County Board.
