BECKLEY -- According to Beckley City police, Amanda McKinney has been charged with 5 counts of forgery and a single count of fraudulent schemes. Police said she stole mail and changed checks so she could cash them.
Officers said more charges could be coming because tampering with mail is a federal offense.
So far, several victims have been identified and more could be coming forward as they notice missing money from their accounts.
Police said part of the difficulty in making an arrest in the case was that many didn’t notice the loss of money in their accounts. Also, investigators said, those cashing the checks didn’t use safety precautions to make sure the user of the check was the same person identified on the account.
“It would have made our jobs a whole lot easier. So with educating the public, and educating businesses we should hopefully deter these types of crimes and prevent them,” said Beckley Detective David Allard.
