FAYETTEVILLE -- A former Fayetteville mayor, recorder and councilman pleads guilty to charges of embezzlement.
In his plea hearing, Tuesday morning, Tom Woodrum, entered a guilty plea to charges of embezzling money from the Tax Office of the Fayette County's Sheriff's Department.
The state auditor said there was more than $60,000 missing from a state fund set aside to pay for jurors and witnesses. Sheriff Steve Kessler assured tax payers that this did not include any of their hard earned money.
"The misconception is tax dollars. People come in to pay their tax. And that money was taken. That's not the case. This was a juried fund that was funded by the state," said Kessler.
The state auditor has offered some guidelines to the tax department to help keep checks and balances. In the meantime, Woodrum has been released on a $25,000 bond. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for January.
