BECKLEY --  A special exhibit is on display at the Raleigh County Library.

“Ellis Island: The Golden Door,” opened Nov. 13 and will be on display through Nov. 20.

The exhibit was brought here with the help of “The Friends of the Library.” It gives visitors insight to the details of how many immigrants came to America through the area.

According to Kathaleen Mooney, it’s a way for them to give back to the community and say thank you.

The exhibit also has a wall to commemorate locals who can draw their heritage to Ellis Island. Mooney said it was surprising to see how many people could be linked back to the area.

“On our wall we have names of local residents that have been established with parents, grandparents, country of origin, province, and years of arrival,” said Mooney.

The exhibit will be in the spotlight on Tuesday when a program will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Several people will be on hand to share their family’s history through Ellis Island. A reception will follow.

Children who are interested in learning more about Ellis Island can stop by Tuesday or Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. where there will be a hands-on reading program for younger readers.
