MORGANTOWN -- A game of field goals, with two touchdowns in between, put West Virginia over ninth-ranked Pitt for the first time in three seasons.
With three seconds left in the game, freshman kicker Tyler Bitancurt nailed a 43-yard field goal to give the Mountaineers the 19-16 win.
After a scoreless first quarter, Pitt's Dan Hutchins scored the first points of the game with a 37 yard field goal. Pitt took the lead 0-3 with over 3 minutes to go in the second quarter.
Next, WVU's Keith Tandy intercepted Pitt quarterback Bill Stull and returned the ball 6 yards to the Pitt 40 yard line with just over a minute to go. This interception was Tandy's third of the season and third of his career.
But the first half excitement didn't stop there. On the drive coming off the interception Bitancurt answered with a Mountaineer field goal, tying the game 3-3.
The third quarter saw more field goals, starting with Bitancurt's 43 yard kick to make the score 6-3. This field goal put Tyler Bitancurt in fifth in freshman scoring at WVU with 64 points.
Pitt answered with a 30 yard field goal of its own with under 5 minutes to go in the third quarter.
Then, finally, the first touchdown of the night. After Pitt kicked off to WVU, the first play of the drive turned into an 88 yard rushing touchdown by Noel Devine. WVU went up 13-6. This rushing touchdown tied Devine for 8th at WVU with 21 career rushing TDs. The run was also the second longest of his career, and his first touchdown run since the UConn game. Tonight made Devine's sixth 100-plus yard game of the season and the 14th of his career.
The fourth quarter started off with the second Mountaineer interception when Robert Sands picked off Stull and landed the ball at the WVU 39 yard line. That was Sand's team-leading fifth interception of the season.
The drive off that interception turned into another WVU field goal. Bitancurt nailed a 39 yard field goal to make the score 16-6.
Pitt answered with yet another field goal from Hutchins. This 36 yard field goal made the score 16-9.
Next, Pitt would score a touchdown of its own, of equal excitement, as Stull completed a pass for 50 yards for the score to Jonathan Baldwin. This tied the score 16-16.
It was Bitancurt's final field goal (the 12th of his career) that sealed the Mountaineer victory, 19-16.
West Virginia racked up 18 first downs and 369 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jarrett Brown was 19-31 passing for 164 yards. The Mountaineers rushing totaled 205 yards on 43 attempted carries. Noel Devine led the WVU rushing offense with 17 carries for 134 yards. Alric Arnett led the passing offense with seven catches for 71 yards.
