WEST LIBERTY -- The best football season in West Liberty University history ended with a 57-35 loss against No.22 California, PA in the Super Region One Final at Russek Field.

No.9 West Liberty had its 11-game winning streak snapped and finished the season with an 11-2 record.

"I'm proud of the way my guys played, but that's a good team," said West Liberty Head Coach Roger Waialae. "They were just better today and made more plays."

Vulcans quarterback Josh Portis, the cousin of Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis, threw five touchdown passes in his 318-yard effort. Receiver Terrance Moore has five catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns. A.J. Jackson also had five receptions and scored twice.

West Liberty gave up over 600 yards of offense. Running back Freddie Bacco ran wild on the Hilltoppers for 173 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.

The game was tied in the first quarter at 7-7, but the Vulcans took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Hilltoppers 23-0 to take a 36-7 lead into intermission.

Record-setting quarterback Zach Amedro, who played with a sore non-throwing shoulder, finished the game with 365 yards passing, two touchdowns, and three INTs. Amedro finished his breakout season with 4,945 yards passing and 49 TD's, which led the nation. The Harlin Hill finalist, Division II's version of the Heisman Trophy, will enter his senior season with 10,675 career passing yards and 88 touchdown passes.

"It was a great season, things just didn't work out for us today," said Amedro.

WL running back Kevon Calhoun scored two touchdowns and ran for 81 yards on 13 carries.

California advances to next week’s NCAA Division II semifinal against No. 2 Northwest Missouri State, which upset previously-unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Central Washingon, 21-20, in Saturday’s Super Region Four title tilt.
