DANIELS -- Some people continue to try to pick up the pieces, eight years after devastating floods swept through their communities.
Lawsuits filed in the wake of the 2001 flooding in southern West Virginia move to mediation in Raleigh County. The hotel at the Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels is where some flood victims continue to play the waiting game.
The lawsuits claim coal mining and timbering companies contributed to the severity of the flooding in in southern West Virginia back in 2001. Gib Lester is one of the plaintiffs and he says he lost his home and everything inside it in the flooding.
Lester said he believes the companies played a role in the disaster, but at this point, he and others are ready for some resolution in their case.
"We'd even like to have a yes or no answer, you know, but we've got nothing in our eight years, you know?" Gibson said. "Even if they're not going to give us anything in compensation, you know, we'd like to have an answer."
Attorneys for neither side would not comment on the talks. There was no word on whether an agreement was reached between the two sides.
Mediation between the plaintiff's and the companies is a step in the right direction according to Lester. He said he and other flood victims are hoping for a settlement to recover even a percentage of what they lost in the flooding, at this point, Gibson said he can not move forward until the case is concluded.
"We've not been able to get any closure at all," Gibson said.
